Road Safety
The York Road Safety Steering Group is made up of members of City of York Council Road Safety Officers and North Yorkshire Police and is currently chaired by the Fire Service. We work closely with our neighbours in the Selby district under the umbrella of North Yorkshire County Council's Road Safety Strategy "95 Alive".
This year we have seen two highly visible and successful campaigns run jointly between the York and Selby Road Safety groups by focusing efforts on the A64 at the start of the school summer holidays and again on the A19 at the end of the summer holidays.
We are now at the planning stage for our activities to take place for the Winter and seasonal campaigns on the run up to Christmas and New Year, which will see us support the national campaign to reduce accidents from drink and drugs.
There are three key strands to improving road safety, these are; Education, Engineering and Enforcement, with the focus of the Road Safety group being mainly the education of new and experienced drivers.
We work to a number of strategic objectives and these are as follows.
- Reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured in road traffic collisions.
- Increase the perception of the communities of feeling safer on the roads.
- Increase the number of offenders brought to justice from 2005/6 baseline for the identified collision causation factor offences i.e. speeding, drink/drug driving, and failing to wear seatbelts.
- Participate in national campaigns and operations e.g National THINK! Campaigns.
