What Is Safer Neighbourhoods

There are 3 Inspector-led Safer Neighbourhood Policing Teams across the City of York. All of these teams work closely with the Safer York Partnership to reduce crime, anti-social behaviour and disorder in each of the wards across the city.

Each Safer Neighbourhood Team has policing priorities for their area, which have been identified by talking to local residents and using statistical information to show what the main problems are in that ward. These officers will attend local meetings, be visible in the area for residents to talk to and have links with other partner agencies in the city. By using these links and the support of SYP, a wider range of initiatives and enforcement measures can be put in place to solve local problems.

SYP Role in Safer Neighbourhoods:

The unique way that Safer York Partnership works means that all agencies across the city are aware of the situation being tackled. SYP staff facilitate the appropriate sharing of information, bring partners together to discuss the issues and ensure a joint action plan approach to bringing about a solution. This ensures that no actions are duplicated and all agencies involved are aware from the outset what other agencies are also involved and what they can do to assist each other. Through this approach, community issues are often resolved without the need for taking more stringent enforcement action. However, if enforcement is required, this approach also ensures that the necessary information and evidence is readily available.

Re Catbells for attaching to a purse.
Last year I missed both days when these were handed out as I read about this in the Press which was delivered around 4.00pm. This year I saw too late again that they were given out in Pickering.

Could you please advise whether you are having any days this year in York to offer catbells to the public.

Thank you.

Hi there Sylvia, today in Parliament Street (York) we're having a 'Face the Public Day' where members of public can go and speak to SYP, the police and many of our other partners, and we're actually giving out the cat-bells there. If you can visit our stall which is there from now all afternoon we will kindly give you one, otherwise, if we have any left after the event we will try to get one to too you.

Hope this is useful and answers your query,

Safer York Partnership
