Initiatives and Projects

A number of initiatives to reduce Violent crime in York have been introduced over the last few yearsby the Nightsafe Group. Below is a snapshot of some of these

Operation STYLE

At the start of June 2010 the Safer York Partnership, North Yorkshire Police and some our partners unveiled Operation STYLE. Operation STYLE stands for 'Safer Time in York, Lets Enjoy' and looks to reduce alcohol and drug related disorder and traffic collisions in York. Operation STYLE is aimed at helping everyone in York start their evening in STYLE, end their evening in STYLE and so you don’t end up in A&E or a police cell. Running alongside Operation STYLE, uniformed police constables will also be giving out orders to leave an area if they believe you are likely to commit crime or disorder. They will also be confiscating alcohol and potentially arresting and fining those under 18 who are repeatedly caught with alcohol in a public place.

Domestic Violence and the World Cup

The Safer York Partnership and our partners including IDAS (the Independent Domestic Abuse Service) are teaming up to raise awareness and combat domestic violence and support its victims during the World Cup. The partnership-led operation called ‘Give Domestic Abuse the Red Card’ aims to cut the level of domestic violence during the World Cup and beyond, and we will be advertising these phone numbers so victims of Domestic Violence can get advice or help:

Independent Domestic Abuse Service (01904 646630)

Victim Support (01904 696455)

Or in an emergency please contact 999

Street Angels

A church led initiative that is made up of volunteers who want to make York City Centre a safer and better place. Volunteers walk the city streets into the earl y hours on Friday and Saturday evenings caring for, practically assisting and listening to those they meet, particularly those who are in vulnerable or difficult situations.

Evening Transport

This group are to continue to support additional bus services in the evening. The additional service is being well used by students which operates until 3am and dovetails with train services to Leeds.

The group are to continue to support increased taxi services for the city, by increasing the volume and locations of taxi ranks. As well as improving the visibility of these ranks

Drink Related Disorder

The city currently has a Cumulative Impact Zone, which will be reviewed to ensure it is still effective. This zone allows the council a level of control over the number of licensed premises in the area, as well as the ability to impose more stringent conditions on the license.

Alcohol Exclusion Zone

The Night Safe Task Group are hoping to present a case to have the city designated as an alcohol exclusion zone, which would prohibit any alcohol being consumed on the streets.

Drinking Culture

The group are instigating work to address problems of people coming into the city when already in drink. The concerns about ‘pre-loading' centre around cheap alcohol being available in larger stores and in particular targeting younger people. Future projects will centre around educating people about the dangers and effects of alcohol, especially in relation to domestic consumption.
