Vehicle Security Campaigns

Although physical security of vehicles has improved over the last decade, York’s auto-crime in common with most other cities occurs because property is left on show. The Vehicle Crime Task Group has identified a number of key themes through data analysis and has then specifically targeted a number of these problems. Snapshots of some of the campaigns are:

Don’t Be a Fool with Your Tools
This initiative was developed following data analysis which identified tools as one of the most commonly stolen items from vehicles in York. It looked to provide information to builders / building firms and suppliers to inform them about the risk to their property if this was left on show.

Satellite Navigation Systems campaigns
Theft of satellite navigation systems appears to have reduced over the past couple of years. During this time and in to the future, Safer York Partnership have used a number of methods to encourage vehicle owners to be vigilant in relation to the security of their satellite navigation system. Examples of this are poster campaigns, information on matrix signs and information for visitors to the city in guesthouses and hotels.

Parking Tickets
Although crime in city centre car parks is low an initiative took place to warn visitors of the risks of leaving valuables on display. This initiative consists of a crime prevention message in a parking ticket style polythene bag attached to the vehicle windscreen. Two alternative messages were used, one stating that valuables had been left on display, the other congratulating the driver for good security sense. Alternative methods were used in so that vulnerable vehicles were not highlighted.

Motor Traders Fair Trading Scheme
Safer York Partnership works with City of York Council Trading Standards and the Motor Traders Fair Trading Scheme to promote vehicle security.

No Crime Days
A number of No-crime days which have been specifically targeted to geographic location have been co-ordinated by the auto-crime task group and its members. These No Crime Days have involved a wide variety of crime prevention services being deployed in an area in order to promote awareness.
