ANPR and Rat-Trap Tracker Technology

ANPR
ANPR is Automatic Number Plate Recognition and is used in the form of cameras to detect number plates of cars that might be sought by the police. It works by reading registration numbers on to the computer and then matching this against existing databases such as license details and test certificates. If details are found to be incorrect then notification is given to various agencies.

The Safer York partnership auto-crime group has worked with North Yorkshire Police in finding the optimum sites in York for these types of cameras to be put in place and it is hoped that this will increase the detection rate for autocrime

Rat Trap
Safer York Partnership has recently invested in up-to-date tracker technology. Tracker devices are fitted to items such as satellite navigation systems and car stereos. When these items are stolen then the location of these goods can be tracked and the relevant police action taken.

These devices have been highly effective in catching offenders in high-crime areas and the Auto-crime task Group has facilitated this project by providing key locations, times and dates for the equipment to be deployed.
