Completed And Current Schemes

Since 2006 the Safer York Partnership Burglary Task Group has been following a plan to alleygate a number of areas of the city. They have implemented large schemes in areas such as Clifton, the Groves and Southbank as well as completed a number of smaller schemes in other areas. This has seen a total of over 100 gates fitted in the city. The Burglary Task Group are also involved in the two largest schemes for 2008-09 which will see more gates fitted in the Southbank area and a new scheme in an area of Holgate Ward.

Alleygating, when done correctly with residents' approval and in conjunction with other schemes, has caused dramatic drops in burglaries. For example, the Clifton scheme has, along with other projects, caused a drop of 70% in burglaries. Alleygating also has knock-on effects on other types of crimes such as reducing graffiti, other criminal damage, fly-tipping and auto-crime.
