What is Community Idol

Community Idol was first introduced by the Micklegate Team in 2007. It was launched as a diversionary activity for young people, aged between 11-19, during the summer holidays. The project is primarily aimed at engagement with Police staff and another way of reducing anti-social behaviour. An additional benefit has been the fact that much needed funds have been raised for local charity through the event namely for the last 3 years the York branch of the NSPCC. The event has grown year on year and has now been adopted by other forces such as London, Lancashire and other parts of North Yorkshire.

We have created excellent links with national and local businesses, who have offered many prizes and donations towards the event. There have been a number of complimentary comments from parents whose children have been 'on the edge' of becoming involved in anti-social behaviour. Community Idol has given them a sense of purpose and focus and they have continued with their music by joining song and/or dance schools.
