What is Crucial Crew

Crucial Crew is an event developed across a number of partners with a common purpose of ensuring the safety and well being of our children and young people through enjoyable interactive media. It is a hands on safety events with the chance to experience potentially dangerous situations in a safe and supervised environment.

Across North Yorkshire and the City of York, there are six Crucial Crew events every year which allow almost 10,000 children to experience workshops, where children are presented with various dangerous or challenging situations - such as a road accident or a gas leak - and they engage in role-play exercises in how to deal with these situations.

A typical Crucial Crew event would involve a group of about 10 children spending 10-15 minutes on a safety scenario and then moving on to the next one. In the half-day session, a child would learn about safety from experts from 9 or 10 different organisations.

The Crucial Crew workshops are usually introduced and/or followed up in schools as part of PSHE, Key Stage 2 (2). This is how the important safety messages learned at the events are reinforced and tested by teachers, with the help of Crucial Crew Interactive.
